The Dukes County commission voted this week to appoint Donald Leopold of Chilmark to fill a vacant seat on the board.

Mr. Leopold, 71, will take the seat held by the late John Alley, who died in March. He was the sole applicant for the position.

He currently serves on the Chilmark human resources board and finance committee. He is also is chairman of the board for Adult Community Education on Martha’s Vineyard. His professional background involves management consulting with for profit and nonprofit organizations.

He said he applied because he was “intrigued by the opportunity to see if I can make a contribution at the town and cross-Island level.”

He told commissioners he plans to run for a three-year term in the fall.
