An unusual gathering of three planets can be viewed low in the southwestern sky soon after sunset. Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury are forming a tight triangle.
For weeks we've been watching as Jupiter gradually pulls away from the ringed planet Saturn. Seeing the two has been a challenge, as both are close to the southwestern horizon. Then they set.
Planet gazing gets a little more interesting next week, as Mercury appears right beneath the two others.
But don't wait. The weather and clouds on the horizon make viewing Saturn and Jupiter a challenge. If you can see Mercury, consider it a gift for a new year.
