Greg Pachico will be West Tisbury’s next fire chief, following a unanimous vote Wednesday by the town selectmen.

“He both has a vision for the future and a respect for the traditions of the fire department, which is a good mix and a good place to be,” board chairman Cynthia Mitchell said.

Once his contract is negotiated, Mr. Pachico will take over for longtime chief Manuel Estrella 3rd, who is set to retire at the end of June.

A longtime volunteer who currently serves as the fire department’s deputy chief, Mr. Pachico is also Chief Estrella’s son in law and received the written endorsement of many West Tisbury firefighters.

“He’s certainly gotten a lot of support in the input we have received,” said Ms. Mitchell. The board received between two dozen and 30 emails in all, she said, in the process of reviewing the three candidates to replace Chief Estrella.

Along with Mr. Pachico, selectmen last month interviewed West Tisbury fire captain Marques Rivers and William R. Choate of Lakeville, a lieutenant with the West Bridgewater fire Ddepartment.

“While I think we could not have gone wrong with any of the candidates, I do believe that Greg is best suited for the job,” Ms. Mitchell said, thanking the other two candidates for their interest.

Following the vote, the board reorganized, naming Skipper Manter chair for the year to come.

Also Wednesday, Ms. Mitchell reminded voters that the annual and special town meetings begin at 4:50 p.m. May 18 at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs.
