The sound of motorcycles roaring across the Island can mean many things at various times of the year. But in mid-November it means one thing: big hearts for small children are riding to the holiday rescue.

The annual Red Stocking Fund Run hosted by the Martha’s Vineyard Harley Riders club takes place Sunday, Nov. 14 beginning at 10 a.m. at the P.A. Club in Oak Bluffs. From there the motorcyclists will ride around the Island to pick up toys and raise funds and awareness for the Red Stocking Fund, which distributes presents each holiday season for kids in need.

The Red Stocking Fund dates back to 1938 when Addie Crist and a few friends knitted six red stockings, filled them with food and presents and gave them out to Island kids. The Harley riders teamed up with the organization over three decades ago, and often riders come from as far away as Rhode Island to join in on the camaraderie and goodwill.

Plus, it is always cool to see Santa roaring to town on a motorcycle; sleds can be so quiet.
