None were injured in a two-boat collision near Aquinnah Friday, Coast Guard Menemsha boatswain’s mate Justus Christopher confirmed Monday.

Mr. Christopher said the charter fishing boat Tomahawk, captained by Buddy Vanderhoop, struck the Gloria Jean, another fishing vessel, around 12:30 p.m. Friday. The collision caused damage to the starboard bow of both vessels, Mr. Christopher said.

He said the Tomahawk suffered around $45,000 in damage, and the Gloria Jean suffered around $30,000.

“There’s a complete gash,” Mr. Christopher said of the Tomahawk.

The Gloria Jean was dragging a fishing net and was unable to maneuver to avoid the collision, Mr. Christopher said.

“When a boat’s dragging like that, they have little to no maneuverability,” he said.

Mr. Christopher said the Tomahawk could have avoided the collision if there was someone on the vessel standing lookout. He said the Gloria Jean tried to make contact with the Tomahawk to no avail.

“As it stands nobody got injured,” Mr. Christopher said.

He added that boaters and captains should remain vigilant out on the water.

“The biggest thing is to always stand lookout,” he said.
