Circuit Arts is celebrating the holidays by reinventing a classic with the premiere of A Christmas Carol: A Live Radio Play.
The show will be presented at the Grange Hall from Dec. 19 to 22. Along with four live shows, the production will be recorded and broadcast on MVYRadio on Christmas Eve.
The show has been adapted from the original text by the husband and wife team of Brian and Brooke Ditchfield, and features an ensemble of local actors. The idea for the performance started when Brian began re-reading a copy of the original story by Charles Dickens that Brooke had gifted him years prior.
“I started reading it and was wrapped up in the words,” Brian said. “I think we all know the story, but sometimes don’t know the original text as well, and I really got swept up in the beauty of it. Brooke and I are often looking for ways to work together on creative projects, and she started taking that original text and adapting it, and then it became a group project.”
The concept of performing it for a live audience and radio simultaneously is a welcome challenge, they said.
“It’s a throwback to perhaps a time gone by,” Brooke said. “You know when you would gather around the radio and listen to a story or gather in a theatre and listen to a story? So it just seemed to fit really well, and we were really excited to try it out.”
A Christmas Carol was first published in 1843, and the Grange Hall was built in 1859. Having the play and the space where it will be performed from the same era lent the show a special poignancy.
“This story is really of a time of the building that we’re telling,” Brian said. “It’s amazing to think about that history, the history of this story and the history of the theatre. I feel blessed to be stewards of the building and stewards of this amazing story.”
Audience members are encouraged to come early to enjoy holiday snacks consisting of mulled cider and other sweet treats.
For the Ditchfields, the event is a reflection of the Island tradition of connecting the community.
“[I’m excited] to be able to continue that tradition of using the Grange as a place to bring the Island together and to celebrate and remind ourselves that we are part of an incredibly unique and diverse and special community,” Brooke said. “And to tell a story that’s about the extraordinary goodness that humans are capable of at a time where I feel like we need to remind ourselves of that more than ever.”
Showtimes are at 7 p.m. on Dec. 19 to Dec. 21, and 2 p.m. on Dec. 22. Visit circuitarts.org. for tickets.
