Five Island gymnasts at Island Gymnastics won first place as a team at the Get Your Feet Wet Grand Finale last weekend in Bourne.
Ruby Russell, Gabriela Barros, Kinsley Tartar, Estelle Mason, Emanuella Aguilar and Abella Jimenez all contributed to the team’s first place finish in their division, with a score of 110.8.
Island Gymnastics director Beth Goodell said she is proud of the girls for their efforts.
“It was a fabulous day for us because it was quite a way to end the season,” she said.
Ms. Goodell noted the growth of all the gymnasts throughout the season. Ruby, the team’s defacto captain competed in her first season at age 15, whereas many kids start competing at a much younger age.
“She definitely set a precedent for me and all of my years of coaching, because she not only did three levels in one season, but this is her first year as a competitor,” she said. “To win the all-around and have some really high scores is just phenomenal and a testimony to her.”
And at eight years old, Abella became the youngest gymnast in Island gymnastics history to win the all-around competition at the gold level.
The girls had nervous jitters going into the meet, Ms. Goodell said, and she made sure to emphasize to her team to enjoy the moment.
“I said, look, girls, let’s just go have a ball,” she said. “Let’s go have fun. Make a friend. I said, you’ve already worked so hard this season and had lots of ups and downs, and let’s just put that all behind us and go play.”
Ms. Goodell is proud of the team’s camaraderie and the support they gave each other throughout the competition.
“These girls are super mature, super focused and very good teammates to each other,” she said. “They really support each other and they work together.”
