Has it truly been 11 weeks since we had an all-sunshine weekend? I know that it has rained at least a little every Saturday since early April, but I am not sure about the length of the string. And I regret to tell you that a wet Saturday number 12 is forecast for the coming weekend by a Boston TV weatherman, the same man who reported that number 11.
This weather behavior has got to stop. Too many important engagements are scheduled and we need the sun.
The first West Tisbury Farmers’ Market of the year takes place Saturday, June 7, from 9 a.m. until noon, at the fairgrounds. The second will be held Wednesday, June 11. It is early for most local vegetables, but you will probably find fresh and perky salad greens, baked goods, Linda Alley’s jams and jellies, live music and elements of the pure joy that is early summer — especially if the sun is shining.
Volunteers are needed to help plant seedlings at a new ‘public food forest’ on the grounds of the library on Saturday, June 7 at 10:30 a.m. The project is part of an Island-wide plan to develop gardens for people to help themselves to fresh veggies right from the ground.
In the old days, yoga for farmers may have been considered an oxymoron or some kind of joke. But, maybe just in time for the food forest volunteers, the Agricultural Society is sponsoring an event called elastic resilience — fascia focused yoga for farmers.
This style of yoga concentrates on the connective tissue that supports and nourishes the muscles, bones and tissue that help the body withstand the pressures of hard labor. Because of the bending, lifting and standing for long periods required for farm work, yoga may be just the thing to help workers plow through to harvesting season. The session will be held Tuesday, June 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is free and dinner will be provided, but please register ahead.
Sara Rosenthal and Julie Prazich have arrived from San Diego, Calif. for the season. The women are founders and sponsors of the summer concert series, Remembering the Rosenthals, now for its 10th year, at the library. The concert, performed by the Music Street musicians, will be held Saturday, June 14, at 4 p.m.
Happy birthday to Joan Apt on Saturday, June 7. Sunday is the big day of celebration for Susanna Sturgis and Simon Hammarlund. And the twins Woollcott and David Smith will be feted on Monday, June 9.
