A Tisbury man is facing charges after he allegedly crashed his car while racing through Five Corners under the influence of alcohol.

Tisbury police responded to the intersection at about 2 a.m. Sunday morning and found Justin Chin had crashed a Chrysler 300 sedan into several vehicles that were parked in a nearby rental car lot, Tisbury police Chief Christopher Habekost said.

Mr. Chin allegedly went through the intersection at 65 miles per hour when he lost control and crashed. A live Go Martha’s Vineyard webcam at the intersection shows a vehicle driving from Beach Road into the intersection before crashing and going out of view of the camera.

“The vehicle came and just bumped into them like a bowling ball down the lanes,” Chief Habekost said.

A second vehicle was trailing Mr. Chin’s car, police said. An investigation into that vehicle is ongoing, according to Chief Habekost.

A passenger in Mr. Chin’s vehicle suffered minor injuries, according to Chief Habekost.

Mr. Chin was arraigned in Edgartown District Court Monday for operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, racing a motor vehicle, speeding and marked lanes violation, according to court records.

“It’s a very dangerous situation,” Chief Habekost said. “We are lucky no one was injured or killed.”

A total of eight rental vehicles at AA Island Auto Rental, a rental service at the corner of the intersection, were damaged, according to Keith Hohmann, an employee who runs the Vineyard Haven office.

At least one vehicle is expected to be totaled, and the others were heavily damaged.

“All of us are just kind of shocked,” Mr. Hohmann said. “It literally looks like a bomb went off.”

The rental business was still open while the criminal investigation continues.
