A No Kings rally will be held June 14 at Five Corners at 11 a.m., co-hosted by Indivisible Martha’s Vineyard, Showing Up For Racial Justice on MV and the Unitarian Universalist Society of MV.

The rally is part of a national movement to protest the current presidential administration and its policies. The goal is to “reject authoritarianism and show the world what democracy looks like,” according to the national website.

Local organizer Carla Cooper said the president’s recent policies and attempts to overreach his powers are a concern.

“Our desire to see our democracy protected and our constitutional republic protected,” she said.

Ms. Cooper also noted that the rally will occur not long after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested around 40 people across Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.

“We want to bring people together,” she said. “We want to expose people to the fact that there are these movements and we are working very hard on the local level to protect our community and the values that our community is proud to hold.”

She hopes the rally can be a reminder that change is possible.

“We really want people to stay engaged,” Ms. Cooper said. “We don’t want people to throw their hands up in the air saying there is nothing we can do, because there is a lot we can do and we have to do it together as a community and a country.”
