Bloomsday, the annual celebration of Irish writer James Joyce, returns to the Island on Saturday, June 14.

The celebration of Mr. Joyce traditionally takes place on June 16, or as close to the date as possible, because that is the day his novel, Ulysses, takes place.

John Crelan, the event organizer, began hosting Bloomsday in Boston as a fundraiser for Stone Soup Poetry, an organization that held open mic events. Mr. Crelan brought the event to the Island 45 years ago.

The event takes place at the Katharine Cornell Theatre and will feature both musical and theatrical performances that showcase the range of Mr. Joyce’s work.

Pam Schnatterly will perform as Molly Bloom, one of the characters from Ulysses, and Philip Diettrich will debut a new work. Mr. Diettrich has set a poem from Mr. Joyce’s poetry collection Chamber Music to music. His son, Hans Diettrich, will also perform, continuing a tradition of family members joining the cast.

Molly Conole and Mark Alan Lovewell will also perform.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s going to be a very interesting program,” Mr. Crelan said.

The show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the door or at Bunch of Grapes ahead of the event for $25. Cash and check only.
