Acrylic paintings, photographs and woodcut prints, alongside imaginative corresponding floral arrangements fill the Old Mill this weekend for Blooming Art, the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club’s biggest event and fundraiser of the season.
Each year, garden club leaders task members with designing and constructing floral arrangements inspired by local artists’ work. This year, 34 club members took on the challenge and produced a vibrant array of floral designs, each displayed in tandem with a unique work of art.
Joan Eville, corresponding secretary for the garden club and a contributing florist for the past 10 years, shared that the floral arrangements are designed to “complement not copy” the artwork and “capture the colors” of the piece, creating a unique pairing of physical art and floral design.
The event began Friday and continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
All the art is for sale, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club’s scholarship fund and to the maintenance of The Old Mill, which the club calls home.
Nancy Cabot, former garden club president who now is involved with floral arranging workshops, pointed out that the exhibition takes on an interactive nature as well. It is “a wonderful way to get people to enjoy art and flower arrangements at the same time,” she said.
Joan Cavazuti, committee member and leader of special projects, said that Blooming Art is a community-based effort and an opportunity for the garden club, local artists and Islanders to “relate to the community and to each other.”
Tickets are $15 at the door.
