The Vineyard Preservation Trust kicked off its 50th anniversary celebrations Thursday with Taste of the Vineyard, one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the organization.
Approximately 1,500 people attended the event at the Dr. Daniel Fisher house, decked out in summer colors and ready to sample the Island’s best cuisine.
Julie Hatt, events and cultivation manager for the Preservation Trust, emphasized the role the Taste plays in creating a community and helping people learn more about the organization, which owns and manages 20 historic sites around the Island, including the Flying Horses, Grange Hall and Union Chapel.
“We could not do this without our vendors, volunteers and sponsors,” she said.
This year, the event welcomed over 80 food and beverage vendors, who donated their time and expertise.
“It is such a beloved event on the Island,” said Nevette Previd, the executive director of the Preservation Trust. “It’s a season opener. We welcome people from all across the Island; it is dress for success.”
“It’s really nice to feel supported by the trade community and the business community,” Ms. Previd added. “It’s the best of the best, and it’s also so great to see everybody on the dance floor letting it loose.”
The Vine Shakers provided the music, their first performance at the Taste.
Psyche Olive Oil was also at the Taste for the first time.
“The Taste is amazing,” said co-owner John Peterson. “It gives us credibility as a small company and allows us to find good people and communities here. Let food be thy medicine.”
As Mr. Peterson spoke, olive oil enthusiasts maneuvered around the table for more samples.
The Black Dog Bakery & Café is a regular at the event, taking part for 25 years.
“The Taste is the best event of the season, said Laura Beckman, the Black Dog’s executive pasty chef. “The best part is that all the vendors work, but are allowed to walk around and look pretty too.”
Harold Lawry 5th enjoyed both the food and the camaraderie.
“It’s like prom after prom,” he said. “It is a rambunctious Martha’s Vineyard reunion for some, where we get to mingle and have fun.”
For Ms. Hatt, the Taste is also a reminder to be grateful.
“If I could wrap it all up in one word, it’s just thankful for everyone,” said Ms. Hatt.
