I could have easily leaked some exciting news in my last column, but thought I’d give it a week to make its way around town naturally. The word has spread to many so now it is time for me to share with those who have yet to hear.
Four-year-old Winston Elliston, son of Julia Spiro and Casey, welcomes a baby sister. Making her debut just a few short days after the summer solstice, Willa Elliston has already melted the hearts of family and friends both near and far. Grandmother Elise is pleased to shared sweet videos of her grand babies so be sure to ask her when you see her. I look forward to watching Willa follow in the footsteps of Winston. He will show her the ways of crab catching, touch tank monitoring and eating ice cream sandwiches. Life will be full and good.
As I have mentioned before, it’s that time of year when long-lost friends show up unannounced for a quick visit. Judd Fuller is now added to that list. He found himself here for a musical event and managed to sneak in a day on the water with his ole pal, Mike Benjamin. We had a quick catch up and then he set out to sea in search of something wild to catch for the dinner table.
Peter, Amy, Ellie, Hannah and Lucy Harrison have settled in to that time of year when they split their time between Chilmark and Norwell. Ellie is both manning the pumps at the Texaco and traveling off weekly for cheer practice. Hannah and Lucy are squeezing in as much summertime frolic as possible.
Toni and Brian Curry have settled in to summertime residency on Harbor Hill. Toni can be spotted on her daily walks and, when not on the water in search of fish, Brian can readily be found sitting a spell on Squid Row.
Henry and Oscar Jordan-Levy, much to grandmother Linda Levy’s delight, have returned to town for an extended stay. Henry is back working for the beach department and Oscar will split his time between the CCC summer program and the Texaco.
Sarah and Spider Andresen might consider installation of a revolving door at their home. While Sarah has been traveling, dear family friend Tegan Angier Lister has been in residence with her three kiddos. Youngest daughter Whitney is also in town with sons Wilder and Bodie.
After eighty-nine years of living life to its fullest, Jack Hobby has said farewell to his time on Earth. Over the years, Jack could be spotted out on the water with kids and grandkids, reading Saltwater Sportsman, taking in a sunset or talking about anything from history to family — mentioning his grandkids always brought a twinkle. My condolences go out to John, Roger, Jill and their families.
The preseason opener has taken place at Flanders Field. According to official correspondent, Sig Van Raan, with the 24 players who showed up to shake the cobwebs out, it felt a bit more like mid-July. He also shares: “Rookie Ted Gavin made his Chilmark Softball debut with some well-placed clothesline drives and a dramatic headfirst slide into first base to avoid being the second out of a double play scenario. It was the play of the game as he stood up amidst a massive cloud of dust surrounding him.”
The game set to be played on Sunday, July 6 will include the annual opening ceremony. All are welcome at Flanders Field to don a glove or simply be wowed by the first pitch of the season.
It’s rare occasion when I find myself rendered speechless, but just that happened when Moxie, Sophie and Zoe Ginsburg stopped by with grandparents Lin and Ivan Karp last week. It’s not that words typically flow out of me like butterflies in a wildflower garden, but I’m not routinely one to be short on words. I thank you, Lin, for your immense kindness and show of strong support when it comes to writing this column. Stringing together 700 words a week can be a challenge, but for you, I’ll rise to it a few more times.
