We are getting more rain which is still needed. But it is still warm. I had stopped bringing up my winter clothes but I had to finish the mess I had made with the other batch. I hope it gets a little chillier so the work won’t be in vain.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Hannah McCormick and Katherine Purda who celebrated their day Nov. 7; Seamus McKeon on Nov. 8; Sienna Crowell and Evan Donnelly on Nov. 9; Hevelyn Dias, Julia Murray and Jameson Whitmarsh, who all celebrated Nov. 10; and to Caleb Guerrero who celebrated his day Nov. 11.
I had the pleasure to attend the opening night of Beauty and the Beast Jr. put on by the students of the Edgartown School. I have attended many of the plays over the years and I am always amazed at the talent this community has. These young ladies and gentlemen get out on the stage and perform flawlessly and without fear. They all are having a great time and their voices are amazing. It makes you hope that they continue on with the voice as you know they will be going on to bigger and better things.
With the holidays coming along and things quieting down I have been reflecting on the past summer months and even spring. Mom always said when we were little, “Don’t wish your life away, it goes to fast as it is.” Boy was she right. This summer flew by and now, when it seemed like forever when we were little, the holidays are upon us and Saint Nick will soon be arriving, ready or not.
I was also thinking that this was my ninth summer at Donaroma's and thinking about all the people I knew when I started and how many more I have met through the years and how I look forward to seeing them in the spring when they all start waking up their gardens.
We have all kinds of customers, like most jobs. There are those who only like pink, or blue, or love a mixture of colors. Then there are the newcomers who come to the Island for the first time and they live in a totally different part of the country and have no idea what some of the flowers or shrubs are in this area.
The famous question to us is “There is a flower down the street in front of the white house with the black shutters!” So to us, of course, that describes more than half of the houses in town. Then we ask could they be more specific. They say it is purple with big green leaves. That’s it, now we are down to 200 other plants. The conversation usually ends with if you could take a picture of it or just bring us a leaf, we might be able to identify it.
Then some will even come in and ask what the shrub is in our front garden. One of the young ladies that used to work with us looked at me and said “We have a garden?” Loved it.
All in all, it has been a great experience but getting ready for Christmas is one of my favorite seasons The greens and trees will be in next week and the ooinsettias will be in the next day. The lights are being put up for “The Evening of Enchantment” which is one of our biggest events, and one of the most beautiful times at Donaroma's. Can’t wait.
Veterans Day has passed, but it is never too late to thank all the men and women who served our country. So thank you for all you have done to keep us safe and free. Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
