Sheila Ann Waters Smith, a native of Edgartown, died at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., on Thursday, August 1, with members of her family close by. She was 92. Sheila had lived in Florida for many years.

Born at her parents home on South Summer street in Edgartown on April 22, 1921, she was the third daughter of Charles F. and Mildred H. Waters. Sheila was descended from two whaling captains, three Mayflower passengers and Governor Thomas Mayhew.

Sheila graduated from Edgartown High School in 1939. After high school she attended nursing school at New England Peabody Home For Crippled Children in 1940. She moved to Chattanooga, Tenn., where she met her husband, David E. Smith. They married in Miami, Fla., on July 3, 1942. David died in 2003.

She also was predeceased by her sisters, Louise Norton of Plympton and Morrisville, Vt., Ruthe MacQuarrie of Falmouth and Charlotte DeVito of Long Island city, N.Y.

Survivors include her children, Jane Foster, Mildred Gomez, Martha Thurman, Chris Smith and Kathleen Smith; two brothers, Charles F. Waters 3rd of Poinciana, Fla., and Horace H. Waters of Andover; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
