Josephine (Jody) Brown Emery died peacefully in her sleep on Jan. 20 at her home in Sunny Isles Beach, Fla. She was 89.

Born in Providence, R.I. in 1932, she graduated from Miss Hall’s School and attended Bennington College, where she studied theatre. After an exchange program in Denmark, she left college to ski in Vermont. She later moved to New York city and taught nursery school. She lived there for several years before moving to Boston. In 1969, she and her husband John Emery moved to Dedham, where she lived until just a few years ago when she moved to Florida to be with her son.

Jody spent almost every summer of her life in Edgartown, sailing, playing tennis and beaching with her extended family and friends. An avid skier, she also enjoyed alpine, cross country and après skiing in Stowe, Vt. Jody and John also took many wonderful trips around the world with their friends.

A lively member of the Brown Girls Sisterhood, she loved to sing and dance until the end. She is fondly remembered by her large and loving family, including many nieces, nephews and cousins who enjoyed her humor, candlelit dinners and joie de vivre.

She was predeceased by her husband John and grandson Darius. She is survived by her son John Emery Jr., daughter in law Selva Belen Emery, and granddaughter Charlotte of Sunny Isles Beach, Fla.; her sister and brother in law, Elizabeth and Toni Wolf of Stuttgart, Germany; and her sister in law Susan Emery of Little Compton, R.I.
