This is the last big weekend of the Island year, a time when autumn points toward Thanksgiving and the holidays beyond.

More than that, it's a time when year-round Vineyard residents take a deep breath, relax a little, begin counting the closed-up houses and closed-down summer businesses, and perhaps even find some time to enjoy the spectacular beauty around them.
