Annual Pistol Championship Was Family Affair

Three generations of the Craig family participated in the annual Martha’s Vineyard Pistol Championships, held Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Rod & Gun Club. But in the end, it was James Craig who came out on top, beating out mother Shirley and son Riley, among others, in the large caliber pistol division. Mr. Craig earned first place in the division with a perfect score of 400.

Competitors had to fire from different distances, positions and time limitations. Second and third place in the large caliber division went to Bill Benns of Cuttyhunk and Joseph Smith II of Edgartown, respectively.

Louise Marx Wins Trap Championship

Louise Marx of Haverford, Pa., won the Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club’s 2013 trap championship on August 18. Participants took aim at two rounds of 25 targets with Ms. Marx breaking the greatest number of clay targets to capture this year’s title. Dick Carlson and Brian Welch, both from Oak Bluffs, took second and third place. Ms. Marx is the first club female trap shooter to take the annual club title.

Charity Skeet Shoot

Dick Carlson of Oak Bluffs maintained his skeet shooting title by once again winning the Klays for Kids Charity Skeet Shoot, held Sunday, July 14 at the Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club. The annual event raised more than $250 for the club’s children’s projects.

Black Powder Shoot Celebrates the Old Ways

As one hunting season goes out with a bang, another begins. The Martha’s Vineyard Rod & Gun Club will host its 13th annual Black Powder Shoot on Sunday, Dec. 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., one day before primitive firearm deer season opens on the Island.
The muzzle-loading marksmanship competition gives Island black powder shooters an opportunity to sight in their ancient guns and hone their shooting skills before going out into the field. Members and the public are invited to participate.
