Sharks Named Top League Organization

The honors continue for the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks, who earned their first league title in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League last month. Early last week, the team was named Organization of the Year by the league for their dedication to and improvement of the fan experience. In the past year, the Sharks installed new stadium seats and lights at the Vineyard Baseball Park, and nearly tripled average attendance. League commissioner Chris Hall commended the organization for its efforts and success.

As Martha’s Vineyard Sharks closer Matt Calamoneri threw warmup pitches to catcher Chris Miller, a cluster of kids gathered around the gate at the third base line, peeking through the wire, a dam waiting to burst if the Sharks won this game. The score was 6-3 and Calamoneri had been lights out all season. If the Sharks won, the second in a three-game series, they would be league champions.

There’s a new name on the Futures Collegiate Baseball League championship trophy. With a 6-3 defeat of the Nashua Silver Knights before a cheering home crowd on Thursday evening, the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks earned their first league title. They swept their way through the FCBL playoffs, which began last week, building on a strong 35-18 regular season to bring home the title.

Sharks at Home Tonight in First Try for Championship

The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks rode the postseason wave on Wednesday night, soundly defeating the Nashua Silver Knights 11-2 in New Hampshire in the first of a three-game series to decide the winner of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League.

If they win tonight at home, the Sharks will be crowned league champions for the first time.

Game time is 7 p.m. at the Vineyard Baseball Park. Pitcher Matt Timoney, who plays for Harvard, is scheduled to start.

If necessary, a third game will be played Friday at home.
