Girls basketball bounced back in a major way after a tough loss to Cardinal Spellman by beating Monomoy Thursday afternoon 35-33.

After a rough start out of the gate, the Vineyard boys bounced back in a major way against a hyped-up and undefeated burly Old Rochester Bulldogs team.


Nantucket may have scored the first basket, but the Vineyard took over soon after as the girls high school basketball team beat their rival 31-22 at home Saturday.

Post-season play for winter sports came to an end Saturday as the Martha's Vineyard girls basketball team lost to Fontbonne 43 to 46 in the section quarterfinals.

The Vineyard girls basketball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the division three south tournament with a 54-41 win over Carver.

Several Vineyard winter sport athletes have been named to All-Star teams in their respective conferences.

In boys’ basketball, captains Izak Browne and Jack Roberts earned Eastern Athletic Conference honors for the second year in the row. Girls’ basketball captain Jennie Lindland also repeated as an All-Star, and was joined by senior teammates Katie Stewart (also a captain) and Maggie Riseborough.

The girls’ basketball team finished off their season with a tournament win, defeating host team Marblehead 49-25 on Wednesday in the annual Brad Sheridan Memorial Tournament. Senior Maggie Riseborough scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds against the Magicians, while senior captain Katie Stewart notched 10 points. Stewart also earned the tournament’s Sportsmanship Award. On Tuesday the team beat Newburyport 40-29 to advance to the final game.

The Vineyarders close out the regular season with a 16-4 record. Postseason tournament seedings will be announced today.

The march to the postseason continued this week with split results; the boys’ basketball team secured an easy victory on Tuesday while the girls took a hard-fought loss. Both basketball squads need just one more win to clinch a spot in the postseason tournament. Meanwhile, the fledgling swim team, hampered by illness and injury, hosted Sacred Heart in a close meet on Monday, but ultimately came up short.
