A metal guard rail on Lambert’s Cove Road near the West Tisbury town beach will have to be replaced.

Contractors arrive Monday to begin a two-week project replacing the collapsed culvert and headwall on the scenic road.

Lambert’s Cove Road will remain closed for longer than projected, after plans for a temporary repair to a collapsed culvert were scrapped.

Contractors repairing Lambert’s Cove Road at Smith Brook in Tisbury have discovered another sinkhole under the roadway, which has been closed to traffic since Dec. 15.

Washed out, repaired, reopened and closed once more over a four-day period last week, the Vineyard Haven end of Lambert’s Cove Road will remain blocked off through the end of the year.

Lambert’s Cove Road on the Vineyard Haven end has been closed until further notice, Tisbury town officials said Friday. Heavy rain is in the forecast for Saturday, and the road has already suffered a washout.
