State Closes Shellfishing in Federal Water Zones

Though state waters around the Vineyard, Nantucket and south and east of Cape Cod remain clear of red tide, the state late last week as a precautionary measure closed federal waters to shellfishing. These are waters that are more than three miles from shore.

Unexploded Ordnance Forces Closure of Little Neck to Public

The continued discovery of unexploded practice bombs from World War II has forced the immediate closure of Little Neck on Chappaquiddick to all public access.

The Trustees of Reservations, which owns the property, announced Friday that approximately 60 acres along the western edge of Cape Pogue Bay will be closed indefinitely.

Furinos Honored by Safety Council

Thomas and Barbara Furino of Edgartown have won the 2008 President’s Award from the Central Massachusetts Safety Council for their efforts to promote safe driving by teenagers.

Their son, David Furino, 17, was killed in an automobile accident at Katama with fellow student Kevin Johnson on May 7, 2004. The Furinos subsequently created a nonprofit organization, Martha’s Vineyard Drive for Life.

Police in West Tisbury Respond to Incidents

West Tisbury police have been kept busy in the past two weeks with calls for a series of incidents ranging from domestic disputes to minor accidents.

On June 12 police responded to a home on State Road where they removed a person from a job site. Christopher McCloud, 41, of Chilmark, was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and assault and battery on a police officer.

Julian Barbosa was raised on a farm where he learned to cook with vegetables grown in his backyard. When he moved to Martha’s Vineyard four years ago, he continued cooking, both at home and later at Zephrus Restaurant in Vineyard Haven where he is the sous chef.

The Planned Giving Council of Cape Cod is looking for nominations for awards honoring distinguished service to philanthropy on Cape Cod and the Islands.

The awards will be presented during the 12th annual Philanthropy Day on Cape Cod scheduled for Nov. 5. A special nominating committee made up of nonprofits, estate planners and other community members will choose an outstanding volunteer, an outstanding businessperson and an outstanding philanthropist.
