Film Festival Helps Create a Community of World Travelers

Whether traveling aboard a wooden sloop, laden with climbing gear or carrying traditional aboriginal spears, films from around the world are about to arrive on the Vineyard. The 10th annual Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival officially begins on Thursday, Sept. 10.

Inspiration in Flocks of Birds and Schools of Fish; Film Center Screens Films of Jacques Perrin

This weekend the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society will host screenings of films by Jacques Perrin, the Oscar-winning producer, actor, director and member of France’s Legion of Honor. Mr. Perrin will travel from France to attend the festival.

Renovations in Full Swing at Capawock, Strand

A newly renovated Capawock theatre in Vineyard Haven is quickly taking shape, and on Monday afternoon, the front doors were wide open and the occasional visitor wandered in. An opening gala is set for May 29. It's the same story at the Strand in Oak Bluffs, with an opening planned for June 19.

Keeping Wooden Boat Dreams Afloat

The craft of building, restoring and loving wooden boats was celebrated Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Vineyard debut of the movie Wood Sails Dreams screened at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society in Vineyard Haven. Film on Food Insecurity

A Place at the Table, narrated by Jeff Bridges and scored by T-Bone Burnett, is a documentary that places the spotlight on hunger here at home. It tells the stories of people struggling with food insecurity in the U.S., where 50 million people are unsure of where their next meal will come from. The Vineyard Committee on Hunger and Martha’s Vineyard Film Society will sponsor a showing of the film on Wednesday, August 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the film center at the Tisbury Marketplace in Vineyard Haven.

Paradise by the Tisbury Marketplace: Film Society Looks to Permanent Home and Plush Seating

Richard Paradise glides around the nearly constructed building on the corner of Tisbury Marketplace, walking quickly to show off the next feature, spreading his arms wide as he elaborates on what is to come. “So just like in a new theater on the mainland, it’s gonna have stadium seating where every seat is a great seat,” he says while standing on the wooden platform.
