The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank does not expect to fully open the Squibnocket Pond Reservation until 2025 due to the long permitting process. 

The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank has purchased 32 acres at Red Gate Farm in Aquinnah from the family of Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg for $10 million, adding significantly to a joint purchase last year of 304 ecologically rare acres.

To support conservation and inspire others to do the same, the Wyss Foundation has pledged $1 million in matching funds to create the Squibnocket Pond Reservation, a rare 304-acre preserve that is now part of the Kennedy family’s Red Gate Farm.

The two conservation organizations announced Thursday that they will buy 304 acres of undeveloped land at the rare oceanfront estate in Aquinnah owned by the family of Caroline B. Kennedy.

After a great deal of thought, our family has decided to sell Red Gate Farm. This may come as a surprise to members of the Island community, so we wanted to share our reasoning.

Two undeveloped lots totaling 93 acres from the 377-acre Red Gate Farm were listed for sale this week. One lot is about 53.5 acres, fronting the Atlantic Ocean, with an asking price of $25 million. The second lot is 39.5 acres with more than 1,000 feet of frontage on Squibnocket Pond, deeded beach access off Moshup Trail and an asking price of $20 million.

Ensuring that Kennedy family members will remain stewards of their rare Aquinnah estate into the next generation, the Martha's Vineyard Commission last week approved a subdivision plan for the 366-acre property between Moshup Trail and Squibnocket Pond.

The 366-acre Aquinnah estate known as Red Gate Farm - and described by the state Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program as one of the most important tracts of land in the commonwealth - was the subject of a public hearing at the Martha's Vineyard Commission last week.

Property owners Caroline Kennedy and her husband Edwin Schlossberg have created a family subdivision for estate planning purposes. No building is planned at this time. The estate subdivision plan is under review by the commission as a development of regional impact (DRI).
