Whaling Exhibit
The Martha’s Vineyard Museum and the West Tisbury School’s multiage class invite the public to Thar She Blows!, a celebration of learning, on Thursday, June 19, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. The event is scheduled for the museum’s Pease House at 59 School street, Edgartown. Thar She Blows! is an exhibit of student work about whales and whaling. This year-long study was based upon an interdisciplinary curriculum unit which focuses on teaching with primary sources, funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
The seeds are planted and the first hay harvested. Across the Island, farms are full of activity and, just as their farmers are busy with animals and crops, farming advocates are working tirelessly to protect the agricultural tradition here.
Despite all this hard work, there is little to no coordination of agricultural activities on Island.
Film Wins Award
Crawford, a documentary film by Chilmark summer resident David Modigliani, won the audience award for best documentary at the Brooklyn Film Festival last Sunday night. The film, about the changes Crawford, Texas, goes through when George W. Bush moves to town, has screened at festivals nationwide and was called “a must-see of this year’s docs” by writer-director Richard Linklater. Tim Lasker Launches
Campaign With Event
Tim Lasker of Chilmark, a Democratic candidate for the Cape and Islands state house of representatives seat, will launch his campaign at Outerland in Edgartown, on Thursday, June 19 at 7 p.m.
Mr. Lasker will combine the launch with a concert and a voter registration drive. Admission is $20 — $10 for 25 and under — and proceeds will go towards the campaign. More information is available by calling Sofi Thanhauser at 347-564-0927.
Dump the Pump Day
The Vineyard Transit Authority invites Island residents and visitors to ride its buses on Thursday, June 19 as part of the third annual nationwide Dump the Pump Day.
In honor of the day, Vineyard Transit will offer half-price fares, excluding 31-day and annual passes.
Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association, the day encourages people to ride public transportation to save money, conserve gasoline and help reduce greenhouse gases.
Frost Biters Race
Warm weather arrived on Sunday, June 8, for the Frost Biters and Winter Guys as they undertook their third Sunday race of the season. Five boats gathered for the 2 p.m. start at buoy Nun 6 in Vineyard Haven harbor for another race around the Zig Zag Course.
The sailors raced to the Red and White Bell buoy in the Sound, then to Nun 4 off West Chop, then across the harbor entrance to Can 23A off East Chop, and then back into the harbor to finish at Nun 6.
Hello, Rose
Sarah and Phillip Levesque of Edgartown announce the birth of a daughter, Rose Ellana Levesque, on June 10 at the Martha’s Vineyard Community Hospital. Rose weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces at birth.
Island town conservation commission members were pleased Monday with what they said were clear and useful instructions for handling state building code changes in state wetland areas.
New construction and major renovations and additions to buildings in designated wetlands must be built on open pilings rather than on conventional solid foundations, according to changes to the state building code that took effect Jan. 1.
Oak Bluffs Plans Harbor
Fest, Summer Solstice
On Saturday, June 21, Oak Bluffs will kick off summer with Harbor Fest and Summer Solstice merged into one day of outdoor entertainment. The day will conclude with fireworks.
State Rep. Eric T. Turkington, who represents the Cape and Islands, has proposed three amendments to a transportation bond bill which would allocate more than $1.5 million in state transportation funding for three Vineyard projects.
