Polls will be open across the Island for an unusual June election today.

Republican Gabriel E. Gomez of Cohasset and U.S. Cong. Edward J. Markey of Malden, a Democrat, are vying to take the Senate seat vacated by John Kerry, who stepped down in January to become Secretary of State.

As the ink was still drying on a $30.6 billion state budget signed into law on Monday by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, a spokesman for Cape and Islands state Sen. Dan Wolf said they were still studying the local impacts of the budget.

Pared down some $750 million from the previous year, Mr. Wolf has characterized the budget as one of the most difficult in memory, but his chief of staff Seth Rolbein said there were some welcome developments.

And now Dan Wolf, the owner of Cape Air, has decided to add politics to his CV. Mr. Wolf has announced he will run for the Cape and Islands seat in the Massachusetts senate that Rob O’Leary will vacate this year, when he makes his own bid for the seat in U.S. Congress that will be vacated by Rep. William Delahunt, who is stepping down.

Following a frenzied weekend of rallies for two of the 2008 Democratic Presidential contenders, the third of the front runners, Barack Obama. slid quietly into the Vineyard early this week for aclosed-door high-ticket fundraiser and no fanfare.

Edward W. Brooke of Newton and Oak Bluffs became the first African American ever elected to the United States Senate by a popular vote.
