Ghoul on Fire by Matthew Dix is on guard in front of the Martha's Vineyard Savings Bank West Tisbury. Mark Lovewell

New faces and tell-tale bits of straw are popping up all over the Island this week, which means one thing: Martha's Vineyard Public Charter School's annual scarecrow festival has arrived. This year's theme was literary characters.

More than 65 handmade scarecrows can be found in front of local landmarks and businesses through November 1. The Hogwarts gang is well-represented: you can find Harry Potter at Conroy's Apothecary, Ron Weasley across from the charter school, and not one but two Luna Lovegoods--one outside Hannah B. in Edgartown and one in Vineyard Haven outside Leroux. Elsewhere you can find Bambi, Oliver Twist, Cinderella and the Lorax scarecrows.

Local businesses purchase a scarecrow for a donation to the charter school. The charter school has a complete list of all the scarecrows.

What a great tradition! I'm enjoying seeing these characters pop up all around the towns. They've made me do quite a lot of double-takes! It's a fun and imaginative enhancement to the community at this time of year.
