White-faced storm petrel dazzles 17 miles off the Vineyard. Lanny McDowell

Tuesday, September 8, 2015

Sunday, Sept. 6, was quite a day for a small group of Island birders, well offshore with Capt. Flip Harrington at the helm of the Auklet. Gliding along on glassy seas, the group saw and photographed dolphins, a shark, shearwaters and red-necked phalaropes. But the sighting of the day was a white-faced storm petrel, never before recorded this close to the Vineyard.
