On Wednesday, April 4th, the resolution declaring that a state of war exists with Germany was passed by the U.S. Senate, 82 to 6, after 12 hours of debate. On Friday morning, April 6th, at 3 o’clock, the House of Representatives by a vote of 373 to 50 adopted the resolution. President Wilson has since signed it. The military forces are fast being mobilized, and enlistments are being called for in all branches. Upon the youth of America will fall the first burden of the nation’s defense in the forthcoming war, and an army of 2,000,000 it is expected will be equipped and trained within the next two years.

With Uncle Same wanting help in the Army and navy, and the various other branches of service, we feel sure that the young men of Edgartown and the several towns of the Vineyard, will freely respond to his call. When the preliminary plans are completed and the time comes to sign up, think well of your country’s call, and show the world that the same brand of patriotism which fired the breasts of the young men of 1861-65, now beats in the young manhood of 1917. The cause is a noble one - American rights and for the betterment of mankind.
