James Jette, superintendent of public schools in Milton, spoke about education, lifting expectations for all students and the importance of voters' rights during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day luncheon for the NAACP of Martha’s Vineyard.

The dining area of the Portuguese American Club in Oak Bluffs was filled on Monday afternoon for the annual MLK luncheon hosted by the Martha’s Vineyard Chapter of the NAACP.

In years past we all have looked forward to celebrating and remembering the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as we recalled his leadership and contributions during the civil rights struggles.

Martin Luther King day is Monday, Jan. 20 and the weekend events begin Friday with a Shabbatt service at the Hebrew Center beginning at 5:30 p.m.
