The Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs will once again host the Festival of Worship in Word and Song, featuring Rev. Sen. Raphael G. Warnock and music director Mark A. Miller.
The service takes place in Sunday, August 9 beginning at 2 p.m. It is a joint collaboration between the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury, the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association and Union Chapel.
Senator Warnock is both the junior senator from Georgia and the senior pastor of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, the spiritual home of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He is also a regular visitor each summer to the Vineyard, leading services for a decade at the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury. After becoming senator the services shifted to the Tabernacle to welcome the larger crowds.
Senator Warnock attended Union Theological Seminary with Rev. Cathlin Baker, the pastor of the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury and their long friendship has included both preachers visiting each other’s pulpits over the years.
Senator Warnock will also take part in this year’s Martha’s Vineyard Author Series, speaking at the Chilmark Community Center on August 13 about his new book, The Crooked Places Made Straight. That event is sold out.
Mr. Miller recently performed a concert at the Old Whaling Church with singer Julian Wamble, who will also perform at the Tabernacle event.
The Festival of Worship in Word and Song is free and open to everyone.
