Word was received yesterday that Marine Cpl. Daniel S. Bettencourt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Manuel A. Bettencourt of Wilber Lane, Edgartown, had been killed in the heavy fighting for the disputed hills of Vietnam which have been in the headlines for many days. Apparently his death was caused by an enemy grenade.

Daniel was born at Edgartown and attended the Edgartown schools, and like his brothers made a creditable boyhood record in the life of the town. He entered Marine training at Parris Island and was graduated from the course there one day after his 18th birthday on April 4, 1963. He went on to Camp Lejeune with the Second Marine Divisions, the force-in-readiness on the East Coast.

He participated in landing exercises in this country and later in amphibious training at Timbakion, Crete.

He was the fourth brother to serve in the armed forces, following in the footsteps of their father. His brother John served in the Marines also, Michael entered the Army, and Bruce served with the Marines.

Daniel, or Danny as Edgartown knew him, is survived by his parents, his brothers, John, Michael, Bruce and Peter, who is still in high school, and a sister, Noreen.
