Longtime West Tisbury police officer Bradley Cortez has been promoted to the rank of sergeant, following the town select board’s approval of his appointment last week. He begins his new job August 1 with a three-year contract.

Police chief Matthew Mincone told the board that Mr. Cortez was the top choice of three candidates interviewed by a panel of Island police chiefs and town administrator Jennifer Rand.

The promotion completes a departmental reorganization sparked by the upcoming retirement of Lieut. Jeffrey (Skipper) Manter after 47 years on the force, Chief Mincone said.

In April, the select board approved the promotion of St. Matthew Gebo to lieutenant as of August 1.

In other business Wednesday, the board appointed Amelia Smith to the climate/energy committee and agreed to support Healthy Aging MV’s five-year community plan for aging and dementia.

Board members also took up a complaint from Seth’s Pond abutter Nick Puner objecting to the presence of a swimming raft anchored in the pond.

While the select board acts as West Tisbury’s harbor master, town regulations are silent on the topic of private moorings, Ms. Rand said.

“Absent regulations, I don’t think we can address this,” she told the board.

The only state bylaw for Seth’s Pond, according to a list posted online by the Massachusetts Environmental Police, is one that prohibits use of the pond between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. from May 15 to Sept. 15.
