Trends come and go, but when it comes to Vineyard decorating, colors that reflect the sea and sky never go out of style. Aquamarine, turquoise, azure, sea glass, seafoam, sapphire, cerulean — they’re all lovely. For a Vineyard house, you want your blues and blue-greens to fall somewhere in that vast land between Nantucket and Key West. Not too conservative but also not too, too saturated. (Though if you are me, you will veer dangerously close to Caribbean vibes — which would certainly work in the Camp Ground. Case in point: Liz Dolan Durkee’s photo below.)

A good strategy is to start with one particular blue or blue/green that you love and then surround it with other hues that are similar in saturation but just a shade more towards yellow or more towards purple, however you want to push it. Or take the same hue and change the saturation. I’ve included an example of one of my own color collages to show how different blues can unexpectedly play together if there is a thread of common color through them all. At the same time, using a very dark blue or white as contrast with sea glass-blues and greens will bring them into register.

While I love playing with one color, I think it’s also important to have a foil — something to knock the blues about a bit. For turquoise, my favorite pairing is tangerine orange; for teal, a more coral-ish red works (as in the pillow cover from The Beach House on the next page). If in doubt, take a look at a color wheel and see what is opposite your preferred seaworthy hue.

You will not have to look hard on the Island to find home décor that suits a sea- and sky-inspired palette. And regardless of the size of the space you’re in, a small boost of color can create a whole new vibe.

According to a recent article in The Washington Post , these Jupiter hobnail glass tumblers made by Zwiesel Fortessa have taken restaurants by storm and spilled over into home décor. LeRoux at Home in Vineyard Haven has them in several colors, but the “Lagoon” blue seems perfect for a Vineyard home. The tumblers are very sturdy — difficult to knock over and easy to clean — so they’d be equally useful for family entertaining or everyday use. Short tumblers are $9.99 each, tall tumblers are $11.99 each.

We love Mole Hollow tapers, handmade in Massachusetts and available on-Island at several places, including Alley’s General Store, LeRoux at Home, and Cronig’s. They come in four lengths and a large array of pleasing colors. Try mixing together a few of the subtle sea-blues and sea-greens in one grouping on your dining table or a sideboard. Prices range from $6 to $10 a pair for 8- and 10-inch lengths.

If you are looking for coastal and nautical décor on the Vineyard, Coastal Supply Co. on Main street in Vineyard Haven can hook you up. A turquoise glass fishing float ($42) —or two — could be a striking addition to a family room or porch. Floats are also available in smaller sizes and in multiples on one rope.

With the whistle of wind chimes and a blast of the ferry horn, you’ll know you’re not far from the sea. This ombrè aqua Waterfall Capiz Shell Chime (around $47) is also available at Coastal Supply Co. It’s made sustainably from the shells of the windowpane oyster, and makes a delicate tinkling noise in the breeze.

If you’re on a strict budget but you have your heart set on color, don’t forget about Chicken Alley Thrift Shop in Vineyard Haven. If you go hunting with a color scheme in mind, you never know what you might find — like these random forks, knives, and spoons with blue and green handles ($.50 each). Check condition carefully when choosing what to buy.

An easy way to spruce up any space is to change up the pillows. But while decorative pillows can be expensive, a new pillow cover is a great alternative. You probably have pillows lying around with old covers that can be removed. Check the sizes, then head for The Beach House in Vineyard Haven to peruse their stacks of pillow covers in charming fabrics. Here is where you can combine some pleasing complementary colors with your blue or green hues if you pick a lively pattern. (Prices range from $28 to $32; sizes include 18 in. x 18 in. and 20 in. x 20 in.)

Ceramic flower vases and glazed flower pots from Donaroma’s in Edgartown can extend your color theme onto the deck, the windowsill — anywhere you like. Add a pop of color on a bathroom sink with a small flower vase. Turn a pot into a mini herb garden (thyme, lemon thyme, parsley, golden sage) and put it near your back door. The green herbs and blue glaze will be beautiful together. Cluster a few vases or pots together for emphasis. Vases begin at $13.50; pots begin at $19.99. Find colorful pots at Jardin Mahoney in Oak Bluffs and Middletown Nursery in West Tisbury, too.
