Tisbury voters approved a $1 million override and elected Connie Alexander to the select board at the town election Tuesday evening.

Ms. Alexander defeated Greg Martino 443 to 224, according to unofficial tallies. The seat was formerly held by Christina Colarusso, who resigned in January.

“I’m extremely grateful for all the support I’ve received,” Ms. Alexander said immediately after the results were announced. “I promise to do everything I can to help this town move forward in the best, most efficient way possible. I’m ready to get started.”

Ms. Alexander has been a Tisbury resident for over 40 years. She taught science at the Tisbury school for 22 years, and has also chaired the Tisbury planning board, the zoning bylaw review committee and the Big Brothers Big Sisters advisory board.

“We lost three key major management players in town within the last year and half and we’re feeling that pinch,” Ms. Alexander said. “But we have great people in place, people who work really hard, and we need to support them as best we can. And we’re getting there. And we’re gonna keep doing it.”

“We need to support our municipal employees and open up more channels of communication across all departments. We’re very siloed right now,” she added.

Ms. Alexander said she supports the expansion of the Tisbury select board from three to five members. Voters approved the measure at town meeting but it still requires a home rule petition to the state legislature, after which it will return to the voters at next year’s town meeting.

In the other contested races, Betsy Carnie secured her position on the board of health with 404 votes to Emma Kaitlin Kristal’s 208.

Bruce Campbell beat out Richard Homans for a two-year position on the finance and advisory committee, with 308 votes to Mr. Homans’ 228.

Longtime town clerk Hillary Conklin held her spot against challenger Joanna Jernegan. Ms. Conklin received 506 votes, while Ms. Jernegan received 119.

The $1 million override, which was approved at town meeting, passed 372 to 288.
