Transfer of ownership of the Vineyard Gazette to Mr. and Mrs. James Reston—James and Sally Reston, as their names will appear at the masthead of the paper—was completed on Saturday, following the announcement of the change made on March 22. Mr. Reston is associate editor of the New York Times and Mrs. Reston is on the staff of that newspaper.
The sale of the Vineyard Gazette was by Henry Beetle Hough who had continued as editor and publisher since the death of his wife, Elizabeth Bowie Hough, co-editor and publisher until June, 1965. Mr. Hough will continue as editor under the new owners. He has named Daniel Hull of West Tisbury and Waterbury, Conn., to fill a new post as general manager.
Long Newspaper Experience
Mr. Hull will come to the Vineyard from Waterbury where he has served as associate editor of the Republican and American. Previously he had been editorial page director for the Worcester Gazette and later for the Worcester Telegram, advancing to the post of assistant editorial page editor for both papers. He is a member of the board of governors of the New England Society of Newspaper Editors and a director of the Connecticut chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, the honorary journalistic society.
He is a graduate of the Taft School and of Dartmouth College with the degree of B.A. He knows the Vineyard well, having come here first about 1928. In 1956 he and Mrs. Hull bought a house in West Tisbury which they are planning to occupy on their arrival this weekend. They have two children, Daniel T. and Stephanie.
