Janet M. (Searle) LaValley, daughter of the late John and Karen Searle of Edgartown and a native of Martha’s Vineyard, died on Oct. 26, 2015 after a long battle with cancer. She was 60.

Janet, who resided in New Bedford with her loving husband of 41 years, Raymond, was best known to her family and friends as Janie. A 1974 graduate of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, she was part of the vocational health aide program for four years at the school.

Janet worked for many years for the Fall River Curtain Factory as a floor supervisor. She loved Chihuahuas and cats, and a member of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls on the Vineyard.

She will be remembered as a wonderful friend and mother with a great sense of humor who could always be counted on to solve problems and was always there to listen.

She is survived by her three daughters, Christina Dominguez and her husband Kevin of Roanoke, Va., Jennifer LaValley and her fiance James of Fall River, and Rachael LaValley of New Bedford. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Kayla; two brothers, Glenn and Kevin Searle, both of Edgartown; and her niece, Tiffany, of Groves, Tex.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 20 at noon at the Westside Cemetery in Edgartown. A potluck get together will follow at the Portuguese American Club in Oak Bluffs. Gifts in her memory can be made to the American Cancer Society.
