Edgartown School Welcomes New Principal

Much has changed between the time 54-year-old John W. Stevens graduated from the Edgartown School and yesterday, when he welcomed the students and parents on opening day and introduced himself as their new school principal. But for the veteran educator, who comes from running large schools in Florida, the scene was familiar enough.

The Fishermen

By MARK ALAN LOVEWELL Thirty years ago, the invention of the electronic fish finder helped fishermen out in their boats find fish. Today’s great device, the computer hooked up to the Internet, helps the rest of us find fishermen who know where to find the fish. The culture of the Internet has helped charter fishing…

Menemsha Pond waters…

Naming the Living

It is too much to hope for that my work and my words will be relevant and useful in 300 years. Perhaps it is egotistical to even pose the question, but on the anniversary of a wordsmithing botanist’s birth, I am thinking about persistence. Not, as often is the case in this column, the persistence…

Moon and Venus

Remember Venus hanging low in the southwestern sky after sunset during summer? Tomorrow morning you’ll find the same brilliant planet low in the eastern sky before sunrise. It is a dramatic shift. Tomorrow morning Venus is joined by the crescent moon. The two are close together. They both rise together as daylight approaches. Sunrise is…

Parking at a Price

The county parking clerk is currently making the rounds among Island selectmen with a pitch to increase the fees for parking violations. Clerk Carol Grant’s reasoning goes something like this: the minimum fee for overtime parking of ten dollars is too low and hardly a deterrent for a summer person who has another ten bucks…

Windsurfing for a Cause

One local favorite capsized twice in his kayak. Of the fifteen windsurfers who entered a race around the Island, two finished. Sailboats called for a minimum of three hands: one on the tiller, one on the main sheet and one on the bilge pump. All in all, there probably were easier ways to raise money…

West Tisbury to Scrub Up Ideas For Cleaning Out Mill Pond

A public forum will be scheduled soon to discuss cleaning up the West Tisbury Mill Pond, allowing residents to participate in a 60-year ritual that has never provided a lasting solution despite some thoughtful, creative and occasionally bizarre proposals. Mill Pond aesthetics have engendered great passion for three generations since the property was gifted to…

Chilmark

There were picnics and parties at the beach all through days and evenings and all the events scheduled around town were well-attended. Now to try and catch up with all the chores that we have left undone during the…

Trophy Houses

Trophy houses, as a group, are bad for the Vineyard. They are huge blots on our rural Island landscape. Summer people are overwhelmingly responsible for creating them. Do summer people create them out of ignorance? Or lack of taste? Or excessive pride? Or out of sheer, don’t-give-a-damn arrogance? In my opinion, all of the above.…

KATHIE CASE 508-627-5349 (kcase1@verizon.net) The street sweeper has been by the house a few times, and has been in and around the school. The maintenance men were out sweeping the sidewalks and making sure all looked beautiful. For the first day of school, everyone is hustling. Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this…

Chappy

MARGARET KNIGHT 508-627-8894 (margaret02539@yahoo.com) Despite the seriousness of the drought we are in, the September sun is too beautiful not to be celebrated. Its delicious warmth heats the cooler breezes and piercing clarity contrasts nicely with the deep blue skies, making it a great time to get to the beach except early or late in…

Cited for Fuel Dock Violations, Ralph Packer Pledges Repairs

Imminent closure of the Edgartown Marine harbor fuel dock because of fire safety violations was averted yesterday, but only after some urgent and at times comic shuttle diplomacy involving state and town officials and the fuel supplier R.M. Packer Company. A spokesman for the state Department of Fire Services yesterday confirmed that the department is…

Oak Bluffs

BETTYE FOSTER BAKER 508-696-9983 (bdrbaker@comcast.net) The sun has moved to a new trajectory. Leaves on the tomato and squash plants curl and brown. The dill and rocket have gone to flower. Only the kale and collards grow strong awaiting winter’s frost to sweeten each leaf. Summer flower and garden beds will be cleaned and composted;…

Edward Brooke Reflects on Long Political Career

You might expect the first black man ever popularly elected as a United States senator would be out there rooting for the election of the first black President. But no. Edward W. Brooke has never thought race — or gender, for that matter — had anything to do with worthiness.

Press Too Quiet on Missing Brazilian Man

There’s an old saying, if a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? The old cliche could be applied to the case of Renato Gomes Da Rocha, a 48-year-old Brazilian national who disappeared from the Island without a trace almost 18 months ago. On…

Sun Salutations for the Masses Fronting Nantucket Sound

There is no clock on the wall of this yoga class. In fact, there are no walls at all, only the blue sky overhead and the wide open ocean. The laughter and chatter of the Polar Bears and the blare of the ferry horn take the place of the soothing, meditative chants typically played during…
