Camp Meeting History
In 1835, six devout Edgartown Methodists established a summer religious community in a large oak grove, near Eastville. By the turn of the 19th century, Camp meetings featuring prayer, preaching, hymn-singing, and repentance had come into vogue in America.
This collection spans nearly two centuries, from an 1859 account describing Wesleyan Grove as a uniquely American religious encampment growing year by year, to modern-day features on preservation, community life, and the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association.
