If you were unavailable to attend Alex Schaeffer’s fire emergency preparedness talk, check out the Chappaquiddick Island Association website for the recording.
As tax season approaches, keep in mind that making donations to the Chappy Community Center may help your bottom line as the CCC is a nonprofit organization. As the holiday season is nearly upon us, check the CCC website online store for books by Chappy authors, clothing, mugs and greeting cards.
The Community Center staff doesn’t take the winter off. Activities continue during the off season. Join Jo Ann Murphy for line dancing on Saturday, Nov. 7 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. No need to be shy.
The next potluck supper will feature an alpha-gal chili cook-off contest. Prizes will be awarded. Seems that half of the folks I know are now affected by the alpha-gal tick borne disease. It basically means no mammalian products in their diets. There are lots of alternatives to butter, milk and beef. In case you didn’t pay close attention in biology class, fish and fowl are not mammals. I think that a turkey burger tastes better than a hamburger. I was relieved to learn that mayonnaise consists of eggs and vegetable oil.
Potlucks are from 6 to 8 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month, except for the Chappy Ferry captain and crew appreciation dinner in December, which is on Wednesday, Dec. 9.
The On Time 2 was finally able to depart for Vineyard Haven last Friday. Three days of a dry northeaster delayed the intended departure. The ferryboats are not designed to handle 40-knot gusts and five-foot waves in the Sound. The On Time 2 is now high and almost dry from a bottom cleaning. The propellers are headed off-island for reconditioning and the Coast Guard will arrive next week to perform their fine-tooth inspection.
Remember that daylight saving time ends this Sunday. If you plan to catch the first ferry trip in the morning and you tell time by the sun or a watch that doesn’t automatically adjust, you will be waiting an hour for the ferry to start running.
Thank you to the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School for the scary peg legged pirate scarecrow at the Edgartown side ferry house.
