In the heart of Edgartown, Nell and Nell Home, with their beautiful array of clothes and home goods, stand out on their own. However, it’s the two Labradoodle shop dogs, Captain and Bosun, who make shopping at the stores a truly memorable experience. Mairéad MacClarence, the owner, has been a fixture at Nell since she was 14, starting as a summer and holiday helper and, for the last eight years, as its devoted proprietor.

A former college rower, Mairéad named her dogs Captain and Bosun to reflect the leadership and teamwork that defined her rowing days. She readily admits that Captain and Bosun are the heart and soul of Nell and Nell Home. Captain, a dignified 10-year-old, and Bosun, an eight-month-old bundle of energy, bring joy to every visitor. Their contrasting personalities create a delightful dynamic that charms everyone who steps through the doors. Captain is the serious one, leading the way with a calm demeanor, while Bosun follows, mimicking his every move with playful goofiness.

Captain has been accompanying Mairéad to work since he was a puppy. He enjoys standing in the window of Nell and often leads passersby to mistake him for a statue until his tail wags or he shifts to greet a newcomer. Mairéad fondly describes Captain and Bosun as her left and right hands, grateful for the joy and companionship they bring her daily.

Every season, loyal customers return to Nell eager to see Captain; this summer, they’ve been thrilled to meet the new guy, Bosun. The dogs fill a unique role for visitors to Martha’s Vineyard who have left their own dogs at home, providing a comforting and joyful presence that eases the pangs of separation.

Inspired by her dogs, Mairéad has curated a delightful selection of dog toys and accessories at Nell Home. Understanding that other pet owners share her desire to spoil their dogs with quality and unique items, she ensures that each product is Captain- and Bosun-approved before it hits the shelves. The duo’s role as official greeters and product testers has enhanced the store’s offerings and created a warm, welcoming atmosphere that resonates with customers.

The synergy between Nell’s current location and its predecessor, Sundog – a men’s store that was an Edgartown staple for nearly 50 years – adds a poetic touch. Sundog’s name symbolizes bright spots in the sky as loyal companions of the sun, paralleling the loyalty and warmth that Captain and Bosun bring to Nell.
