The playoffs are right around the corner for the Vineyard’s spring sports squads as the regular season wraps up this week with a final bout against Nantucket on tap for multiple teams on Saturday.

The baseball team will see the most of the Whalers as they will square off at the Shark Tank Saturday at 11:30 a.m. before heading over to Nantucket Monday to go at it again.

After a 3-0 win Tuesday against Cardinal Spellman on the road, the boys have a chance to sneak into the playoffs if they sweep the Whalers in the final two games.

In the win over the Cardinals, the Vineyarders scored all their runs in the fifth inning while Eli Bryant tossed a one-hit shutout on the mound. He also went one for three at the dish and scored a run. Lathrop Keene had two runs batted in and scored as well. Matt Day rounded out the Vineyard’s offense, going one for three and scoring a run. This was the Vineyarders’ third win in their last four games.

Over their last six games, the girls lacrosse team has gone three and three, leaving them with a chance to make the playoffs as well. On Monday, they traveled to Brockton to play Cardinal Spellman and won 12-7. Lizzy Chvatal was the Vineyard’s leading scorer with four goals. Ava Mikos, Brynn Savva, Annabelle Metell and Charlotte Scott all scored twice and Lara Sedlier rounded out the scoring for the Vineyarders. Alex Royal made eight saves in the win.

On Wednesday, the girls are on the Cape to play Sturgis East before they head to Nantucket to play the Whalers on Saturday. With a record of 8-8 right now, if they split the final two games, that should be all they need to get into the dance.

Despite losing eight in a row, the boys lacrosse team also has an outside chance to make the playoffs. Currently ranked 29th in division three, the boys have a home game against Nantucket on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and a win could punch their ticket to the postseason.

The Whalers will be no easy task, though. Currently ranked fifth in division four and coming off a championship in that division last year, the Vineyard’s rivals will be fired up for a chance to sweep the season series. This will be one not to miss.

Then there are the Vineyard tennis squads, both with only one loss on the season. The boys are ranked second and the girls third both in division three. With state championship aspirations, crunch time begins now after both teams defeated division two powerhouse Sharon to close out the regular season on Tuesday.

The boys’ only loss of the season came against Sharon last week on the road and they avenged it with a 3-2 win at home. With a top-two seed secured, they will have home court advantage throughout the playoffs slated to begin next week.

The girls’ win over Sharon was again thanks to excellent doubles play as Leah Thomson and Zoe Treitman won the first doubles match 7-5, 6-2 and Ella Moran and Clementine Zeender won the second doubles match 6-3, 6-4. Charlotte Marshard won the second singles match for MV 6-1, 6-4.

Like the boys, the girls should also have home court advantage for the majority of their playoff run starting next week.

Also cruising into the postseason is the sailing team, which has won five races in a row to improve their record to 14-7 while going 9-2 within the Cape and Islands league.

During their five-game win streak, the Vineyarders defeated Hingham, Sturgis, Falmouth, Monomoy and Nauset. On Thursday, they will close out the regular season against the Whalers at the Great Harbor Yacht Club on Nantucket.

The girls golf team qualified for the Cape and Islands League championship after notching their fifth win of the season last Thursday against Falmouth for their third win in a row. While they did not have a golfer finish in the top three, it’s still been an incredibly successful first year as a varsity sport for the Vineyarders. The future is bright for girls golf on the Island.

Finally, the track and field team competed at the Cape and Islands league championship Tuesday in Barnstable. The Vineyarders’ top finishers were Madison Mello, who placed first in shot put with a 34-10 toss, nearly three feet more than second place, and second in discus with a 96-01 throw. The other Vineyarder to take home the gold was Camille Brand in the high jump with a 5-02 leap. Enzo Reis finished third in the 110m and 400m hurdles with times of 15.57 and 1:03.3, respectively. Luis Costa finished third in the 800m race with a time of 2:08.26. Kaniel Morgan placed third in discus with a 110-01 toss. And Maria Xavier finished third in the long jump with a 15-11.25 leap.

This weekend the team will run in the South Shore twilight invitational before the division five championship begins next week.
