The Healey-Driscoll administration has awarded more than $2 million dollars to the Bellevue veterans housing project in Oak Bluffs, which hopes to start construction in the coming months.
The state office of housing and livable communities announced the funding on Monday, granting $2.1 million to the project on Bellevue avenue.
The development will offer 12 one-bedroom homes and community spaces for veterans making between 30 per cent and 80 per cent of the area median income. The project was proposed by the town of Oak Bluffs, which is working with the Island Housing Trust and the Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center.
The project was approved by the Oak Bluffs zoning board of appeals last June and would be the Island’s first housing designated specifically for veterans.
Bellevue was one of eight supportive housing projects that the administration announced funding for this week.
Philippe Jordi, the CEO of Island Housing Trust, said that this means the project is 75 per cent of the way towards its funding goal.
“It’s great news,” he said. “This really does make a big difference.”
The developers are looking towards breaking ground on the project at the end of this year or early next spring, Mr. Jordi said.
