The Trustees of Reservations has postponed its plans to hold prescribed burns at two of its Vineyard properties this week due to concerns about the weather.
Burns were initially scheduled to be held at Wasque on Chappaquiddick and at Long Point Wildlife Refuge in West Tisbury on April 10 and 11. But the Trustees on Thursday announced that the conservation organization was scuttling the plans due to the pending weather over the weekend.
A new date for the burns has not yet been scheduled. The Trustees said it would update the community about the effort to manage the barrens habitat.
“Barrens are a habitat that occurs in harsh landscapes such as sandy areas and dry ridge tops,” the Trustees wrote in a statement Wednesday. “Poor soil quality makes it difficult for plants to grow, but many plant and wildlife species have adapted to—and thrive in—these harsh environments such as oak, pitch pine, blueberry, specialized shrubs, grasses, herbs, and diverse wildlife.”
