A Tisbury man was indicted last week on a charge of assault to murder in connection with an alleged knife attack from earlier this summer.

A Dukes County grand jury returned indictments on Sept. 9 for Brandao Geraldo Alves Caldeira, who was arrested by Tisbury police in June for allegedly attacking his wife with a knife.

The grand jury also indicted Mr. Geraldo Alves Caldeira, 39, on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a dangerous weapon, breaking and entering in the nighttime for a felony, witness intimidation and assault on a household or family member.

An arraignment in Dukes County Superior Court for Mr. Geraldo Alves Caldeira has not yet been scheduled, according to court records.

Mr. Geraldo Alves Caldeira had been initially charged with attempted murder in the Edgartown District Court, before the grand jury considered his case to be moved into the higher court.

He had pleaded not guilty initially in district court and was held without bail.

The alleged incident took place on June 21 at a home on Cook Road, according to Tisbury police.

Police were called late on a Sunday evening to the home for a domestic incident. Witnesses told police that Mr. Geraldo Alves Caldeira attacked his wife with a knife. He held the knife to her face and also threatened to kill her and other people at the home, according to police.

When officers arrived, they found the woman was covered in blood and semi-conscious. Officers had to separate Mr. Geraldo Alves Caldeira from the woman, and it appeared she had a deep laceration or stab wound on the inside of her left arm.

Neighbors told police that an argument had broken out over the couple’s relationship and Mr. Geraldo Alves Caldeira swung the knife at her and one of the neighbors.

Police said the wife, 41 at the time, suffered serious injuries but was in stable condition in the immediate aftermath.
