Strong winds from Friday’s northeaster are causing travel disruptions that are expected to continue through the weekend.
With winds expected to gust up to 55 miles per hour, all of the Island’s ferry operators announced cancellations on Friday.
The Chappy Ferry stopped operations around noon. The ferry had previously planned to run only one boat.
“Safety is the number one priority,” the ferry service wrote on Facebook.
The Vineyard is under a high surf advisory, high wind warning and coastal flood warning from the National Weather Service, and the advisories remain in effect until Sunday.
The forecast also caused the Steamship Authority to cancel several trips on the Hyannis-Nantucket route, and some of the afternoon freight ferries for the Vineyard were canceled due to the weather. The Steamship said that trips will run on a trip-by-trip basis today, and it was likely ferries into Oak Bluffs would be diverted to Vineyard Haven.
Seastreak canceled service between New Bedford, the Vineyard and Nantucket from Wednesday through Sunday. Island Queen did the same, pausing all ferry service through the weekend. Hy-Line also canceled trips from Hyannis through Saturday.
