A former Tisbury select board candidate was sentenced to five years probation after pleading guilty last month to two counts of rape.

MacAleer Schilcher, who ran for office in 2023, tendered the guilty pleas in Dukes County Superior Court on Oct. 23, and had two other charges of rape dismissed, according to court records.

Judge Peter Krupp sentenced Mr. Schilcher to five years probation, and he will need to register with the sex registry board and local police. He must also undergo a mental health evaluation and have no contact with the victim.

Mr. Schilcher, 41, was indicted on the rape charges in 2023. At the time, prosecutors said they were connected to a 2019 incident in Tisbury.

The case appeared to be headed for a trial last month when Mr. Schilcher’s attorney Robert Moriarty told the court it was unlikely that a plea deal could be reached before the case was set to go before a jury on Oct. 26.

Reports on the incident were previously impounded.

Mr. Schilcher was one of four candidates who ran for select board in 2023, and came in last with just 49 votes.
