Dos Mas is no mas. The owners of the former Mexican restaurant on Circuit avenue have officially reopened the spot with a new name and menu. Now called Esh, the establishment has shifted its focus to upscale American cuisine and undergone a makeover.
“We just kind of felt it was time for some change,” owner Evan Shai told the Gazette last week.
Mr. Shai co-owns the restaurant with his siblings, Zared Shai and Megan Shai Brown. The family also owns Taco MV in Edgartown and Katama Kitchen at the Katama Airfield.
The team decided to move away from Mexican after hiring a new chef from California, whose background is in French cuisine. The result is a menu that Mr. Shai described as “progressive American.” Tacos and nachos have been swapped for mushroom risotto, salmon with crab sauce and short rib with an A&W root beer sauce.
“The food is phenomenal…” Mr. Shai said. “I’d say we’ve gotten a lot of good feedback.”
The space also boasts new artwork and a redone bar area, which Mr. Shai described as more intimate than the previous setup. The biggest change is a newly visible fireplace, previously hidden behind a wall. Though not yet functional, the hearth inspired the name Esh, which means fire in Hebrew.
“The whole place is different visually,” Mr. Shai said.
As the spot settles into its new identity, Mr. Shai said that the menu is still growing and changing. He noted that currently, the restaurant has a brunch and dinner menu, but is hoping to expand to breakfast and lunch.
“It’s going to be evolving,” he said.
