Firing up the kiln at Merry Farm Pottery. - Jeanna Shepard

The next Tuesdays in the Newsroom is entitled Artists in Winter and will feature five local working artists and gallery owners, all of whom grew up on the Vineyard.

The event is Tuesday, Feb. 10 from 5:30 to 7 p.m., held in the newsroom of the Vineyard Gazette.

Artists include Micah Thanhauser, Colin Ruel, Nettie Kent, Althea Miller and Taylor Stone.

Mr. Thanhauser owns and operates Merry Farm Pottery in West Tisbury, a studio, gallery and community hub for local ceramicists. On his website, Mr. Thanhauser summarizes his philosophy: “I make objects to be of both use and beauty. Each piece is formed by my hands, transformed by the fire, and completed by use.”

Nettie Kent and Colin Ruel own the Ruel Gallery in Menemsha, which features Mr. Ruel’s paintings and Ms. Kent’s jewelry. The gallery’s website describes their deep roots on the Island and in the artistic community: “Colin Ruel is a self-taught artist from the fishing village of Menemsha on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. He can trace his family’s Island roots back to the settling of the island. Nettie Kent Ruel is a jeweler and the daughter of the painter Doug Kent and Lesley Eaton. Nettie was born and raised in West Tisbury. Nettie and Colin met on the Island in 2008 and married in Menemsha in 2014. They have two boys Razmus and Wyld.”

Althea Freeman-Miller owns Althea Designs in Vineyard Haven and is active in creating a community arts scene there. She is a printmaker and the founder of the First Friday Vineyard Haven events and president of the Vineyard Haven Harbor Cultural District. As her website states, she also: “offers open studio shopping, printmaking workshops, and creative wellness sessions.”

Taylor Stone is a cut paper artist based in Vineyard Haven who also plays many roles in growing the arts scene there. She is a board member and clerk of the Vineyard Haven Harbor Cultural District, and in 2024 became the lead coordinator for First Friday and other Visit Vineyard Haven events year-round. On her website she describes her work as: “Whimsical illustrations all made from paper and framed in handmade shadowbox frames.”

The event will include a roundtable discussion with time for questions. There is no charge but an RSVP is requested. Register in advance at rsvp@vineyardgazette.com.
